The Book

Soft and dreamy photos are the result of countless hikes and sunrise missions - and of many years spent outdoors in northern Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Just like the reindeer’s eyes shift from blue to gold, so do the images in ‘Sápmi - Living Landscapes’. Emphasized by the intriguing concept of this fine art photography book, they symbolize the seasonal changes, the contrasts and the light in Arctic Europe.

By giving every second page a deeper cut, the reading direction will reveal either a golden realm, or one of blue tones. Only a slower stroll through the book lets one discover all the pages, alternatingly warm and cold. Like when exploring the outdoors, every journey through this book will yield a different experience.

The Importance

With Lapland as a well-known tourist destination, the Arctic continues to intrigue many. Yet Sápmi and the region’s origins remain relatively unknown, as do its challenges. While captivating images give these landscapes a voice, concise text not only tells our story, but also informs readers about today’s context.

Up north, the only contrasts greater than the seasonal changes are the open pit mining and the clearcutting affecting the landscapes that have been taken care of so gently for thousands of years. By celebrating nature’s beauty and diversity, this book aims to share our affection for these landscapes and a lifestyle in closer connection to them. With it, we hope to inspire people to reflect on their relationship with nature as well.

This book is an elegant tribute to friluftsliv, an invitation to go out whilst not leaving a trace, one footstep or turn of a page at a time.

The sale of this book is coupled to a fundraising campaign for Rewilding Europe. With your purchase, you contribute to making Europe a wilder, more resilient place.

Depending on the reading direction, one will go through a world of warm golden tones, or a colder blue one. This gives the impression of it being two books in one.

The Photographer, Author & partners

Hanneke Van Camp is an award-winning nature photographer from Belgium. Together with her partner Arne, she spends most of the year in Arctic Europe. In search of a life close to nature, she regularly pushes the boundaries of her comfortzone. Her love of nature has accompanied her since childhood - and led her from studying biology to the camera.

With her photos Hanneke hopes to inspire people to reconnect to nature, to rediscover its value, and to eventually become ambassadors for its conservation.

Remote project manager and writer Arne Bormans is always looking for ways to make nature a daily habit. Based on their own experiences and exchanges with people from Sami communities, researchers and locals, Arne has written the text for this photography book.

The book is designed by Tina De Souter, a Belgian book designer specializing in photography-, design-, and art books.

Foreword by Ami Vitale.

Ami Vitale is an acclaimed National Geographic photographer, writer and documentary filmmaker, as well as the founder of Vital Impacts.
